Strike, violence across India on Teachers’ Day | Six Pay Commission Aftermath

As the country marked the Teachers’ Day on Saturday, faculty members of prestigious IITs went on a hunger strike and teachers in Lucknow and Ranchi hit the streets demanding better wages suffering police lathicharge in the capital of Uttar Pradesh. The teachers of the IITs took part in a nationwide relay fast this morning demanding better salaries and allowances as part of the nationwide stir by them. Nearly 4,000 faculty members of the IITs also threatened to go on an indefinite strike to press their demands. A final decision on this would be taken when mmbers of the IIT Faculty Federation meet in Delhi tomorrow, Dr Devang Khakhar, Director, IIT-Bombay, told PTI. Ten days ago, the faculty of the elite technology institutes had taken mass casual leave and attended classes wearing black badges in protest.

Police charged with batons to break up a protest demonstration by part-time teachers in Lucknow, leaving six protestors injured. The shiksha mitras (partime teachers) were holding a protest demonstration in support of their demand for hiking honorarium and regularisation. Police said the it used mild force to disperse the protestors who had assembled on the busy Vidhan Sabha marg, obstructed vehicular traffic and pelted stones damaging a bus. In Ranchi, hundreds of teachers staged a demonstration in support of their charter of demands, including implementation of Sixth Pay Commission.

Teachers of government-run universities and colleges in Madhya Pradesh went on an indefinite strike from today demanding implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, a report from Bhopal said. “We want the state government to immediately implement the pay panel’s recommendations and hike salaries and perks,” Madhya Pradesh University Teachers Federation secretary Dr Rajeev Dubey told PTI.”We staged protests across Madhya Pradesh and observed Teachers’ day as black day,” he said.
