The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) is expected to release the results of its Class X (ICSE) and Class XII (ISC) exams at 3pm on Tuesday, May 17, 2011.  The exams were conducted from February 28 to March 26, 2011.

PROCESS OF ACCESSING RESULTS THROUGH SMS ON GSM MOBILES :-

Dreams, aspirations and determination are the ingredients that make student days the most exciting stage of one’s life. And in the present times of cut-throat competition, the one thing that every student dreams of is – to get enrolled for a professional course of her/his choice at a premier institution in the country.

In the days gone by, long queues for admissions, incomplete information and travel costs were huge pain points on way to charting an ideal career path. But today, the Indian education system has taken a digital leap with the help of the effective use of the Internet.

The availability of downloadable forms, online gateways to pay admission fees and submit forms, have helped the students to concentrate on the most important task at hand – studying for the exams, thereby reducing physical, mental and financial burden on them and their parents. The introduction of centralised online counselling is also one of the most significant steps taken by the Indian Government towards making things easier for the student community.

What are the objectives?

The objectives of online counselling can be enumerated as follows:

• to streamline the admission to professional and technical courses in the country;
• to solve problems of overlaps and reduce physical, mental and financial burden on students and their parents due to multiplicity of entrance examinations;
• availability of results on the web;
• to allow a candidate to exercise choices for a branch and institutions several times during off-campus online counselling;
• online display of vacancy and allotted position to enable more transparency in the admission process;
• allotment of institution and branch as per the merit of the candidates.

What is centralised online counselling?

The Ministry of Human Resource Development , Government of India took a policy decision in 2002 to conduct an All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE)  annually, eliminating many of the large number of entrance examinations that were being conducted till then by various institutes in the country for admission to undergraduate degree programmes in the disciplines of Engineering/Technology, Pharmacy and Architecture – an initiative that has been widely accepted and appreciated.

A Central Counselling Board (CCB) -  constituted by the Government coordinates admissions to UG degree programmes in the disciplines mentioned above in respect of select institutions.

CCB‘s counselling process

On the basis of performance in AIEEE 2010 – , separate rank lists are prepared for B.E./B.Tech. and B.Arch/B.Planning. Score Card indicating All India Rank and State Rank with total marks shall be sent to all candidates who appeared in AIEEE.

Candidates scoring above a certain cut-off percentage of marks are called for counselling. The All India/State ranks and marks are released on the AIEEE website. All successful candidates are to be called for central counselling as per the schedule (2.70 MB) - published by the Central Counselling Board (CCB). The decision of seat matrix etc. will also be taken by the CCB. The required information will be displayed on CCB‘s website -.

Things to be kept in mind:

• The Central Counselling Board -  shall send by post the Information Brochure for counselling only to the candidates eligible for counselling.
• Verification of documents regarding identification, age, qualifying examination, state of eligibility and category of the candidate, would be done at the time of counselling/admission. On failing to establish of any of the documents, the candidates will not be considered for admission.
• SC, ST, OBC and PH candidates will be required to produce original certificates issued by the competent authority at the time of counselling.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development -  has also announced the setting up of 10 new NITs (109 KB) -  , under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, at Arunachal Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Pudducherry, Sikkim and Uttarakhand.

While the CCB  conducts online counselling for institutions participating in AIEEE, viz. NITs and deemed universities, with assistance from the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) admit students by conducting their own counselling.

IITs go the online way

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have decided to abandon a tense counselling session that all students till now had to attend to gain admission. From now on, students will be asked to pick their preferred IIT and course through an online facility prepared by the institutes, which will be based on the candidates’ ranks in the Joint Entrance Examination. This will allow all general category students to submit their preferences online. However, all other candidates will have to travel to the nearest IIT campus for the same as they have to submit their certificates.

Online counselling at state level: Some states like Haryana , Uttar Pradesh  , Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Orissa that conduct their own entrance examinations also provide online counselling to students on the basis of marks scored in the relevant examinations. Panjab University (PU)  has also launched a website for centralised online admissions in the session 2010-2011 in the B. Com. Course.

Counselling for admission to Medical/Dental Colleges: The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) conducts the counselling for admission to undergraduate medical courses, on the basis of marks scored by candidates in the All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Examination (AIPMT) , conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) . This year, the counselling will be held by personal appearance through Video-Conferencing. Details of the counselling procedure can be accessed here (90.3 KB) - .

The use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) for the entrance examination system and counselling sessions is aimed at standardising the admission process and making it more professional. The Indian Government’s initiative to facilitate the use of Internet for the benefit of the student community is a commendable effort and it is hoped that this endeavour will help India maintain its lead in producing the best-trained brains in the world.

10. MTU/GBTU/UPTU/UPSEE 2011 – COUNSELING PROCEDURE

If you have been scrounging to read about sports but haven’t been able to lay your hands on any good book, the upcoming 19th New Delhi World Book Fair beginning Jan 30 is a must-visit.

The fair, organised by the National Book Trust (NBT), will see books on all genres and from across the world but the theme this year is “Reading for Commonwealth” in view of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October.

According to an official of the NBT, a total of 22 countries will participate in the fair.

“Countries like Singapore, Japan, US, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be among the 22 nations participating in the book fair, thereby offering a wide range of books in the fair,” an NBT official said.

The book fair will be organised at Pragati Maidan and will culminate on Feb 7.
