CAT 2011 – New Pattern and Important Dates

IIMs on Monday announced a changed module for the exam.CAT 2011 will now have only two sections and not three as earlier and the examination time has been extended to 140 minutes.IIMs and their partner in conducting the online CAT test — Prometric — said that the two sections would be:

Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation
Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning.

In the new method the IIMs have clubbed the sections which were divided into three parts in the older method. As per that method the three sections included Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability and Analytical Reasoning and Data Interpretation.

The candidates will also be provided 15 minutes tutorials before the examination starts. Including the tutorials timing, examination will be of two hours and 35 minutes- (140 minutes of exam and 15 minutes of tutorials).Candidates will have 70 minutes to answer 30 questions in each section which will have an on-screen countdown timer. Once the time ends for the first section, they will move to the second and will no longer be able to go back. Although new in the computer-based version of CAT, this format was previously practiced in some of the earlier paper-and-pencil years. Earlier, the three sections had 20 questions each.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Differently Abled (DA) (It may also referred to as Persons with Disability (PWD) category)], awarded by any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case the candidates are awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the conversion of grades/CGPA to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the university/ institution from where they have obtained the bachelor’s degree. In case the university/ institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100. Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply. If selected, such candidates will be allowed to join the programme provisionally, only if he/she submits a certificate latest by June 30, 2012 from the Principal/Registrar of his/her College/Institute (issued on or before June 30, 2012) stating that the candidate has completed all the requirements for obtaining the bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification on the date of the issue of the certificate. IIMs may verify eligibility at various stages of the selection process, the details of which are provided at the website www.catiim.in. Applicants should note that the mere fulfillment of minimum eligibility criteria will not ensure consideration for shortlisting by IIMs.

Prospective candidates must maintain a valid and unique email account and a phone number throughout the selection process.

Note for SC/ST, NC-OBC, and DA Candidates

If you belong to SC or ST categories, your caste/tribe must be listed in the Government of India schedule. The caste certificate that you send to IIM should be in the Government approved format and should clearly state: (a) Name of your caste/tribe; (b) Whether you belong to Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe; (c) District and the State or Union Territory of your ordinary residence; and (d) the appropriate Government of India schedule under which your caste/tribe is approved by it as Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe. A copy of the certificate must be sent to CAT Centre, C/O Admissions Office, Indian Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, Joka, Diamond Harbour Road, Kolkata-700 104 . Mention the Voucher Serial Number on the certificate. Failure to produce a copy of the caste certificate will result in the rejection of your CAT registration.

The caste certificate must be shown and a photocopy enclosed at the time of interviews. Moreover, the caste certificate must be submitted at the time of joining programmes of any of the IIMs.

If you belong to the Non-Creamy Other Backward Classes (NC-OBC), you must produce the NC-OBC certificate duly signed by competent authority and enclose its photocopy at the time of interviews. Moreover, the certificate must be submitted at the time of joining programmes of any of the IIMs. Failure to do so during the post CAT selection process will result in you not being considered under the reserved category.The DA certificate must be shown and a photocopy enclosed at the time of interviews. Moreover, the DA certificate must be submitted at the time of joining programmes of any of the IIMs.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act aims at enhancing the livelihood security of people in rural areas by guaranteeing hundred days of wage-employment in a financial year to a rural household, whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

MNREGA fosters conditions for inclusive growth, ranging from basic wage security and recharging rural economy to a transformative empowerment process of democracy. It provides a strong social safety net for the vulnerable groups by providing a fall-back employment source, when other employment alternatives are scarce or inadequate.

The Schemes so formulated are called the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), followed by the name of the State.

Process of Application/Registration:

How to apply for Registration?
Applications should be given in writing and should include the registration number of the Job Card, date from which employment is required & the number of days of employment required. It should contain the names of those adult members of the household who are willing to do unskilled manual work, and particulars such as age, sex and SC/ST status.
Where to apply?
Applications for work should generally be submitted to the Gram Panchayat. An individual may appear personally and make an oral request for registration.
What are the timings?
The application for registration may be given on plain paper to the local Gram Panchayat authority on any working day between 10 AM and 5 PM. To allow maximum opportunities to families that may migrate, registration is open throughout the year at the Gram Panchayat office during working hours.

Who are the target audience?
Rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
What are the benefits?
The scheme ensures guaranteed employment for people in rural areas for hundred days in a financial year.

Verification of applications will be based upon local residence in the Gram Panchayat concerned, the household as an entity, and the fact that applicants are adult members of the household. After verification, the Gram Panchayat will enter all particulars in the Registrations Register in the Gram Panchayat. Every registered household will be assigned a unique registration number.

Job Cards:

The Gram Panchayat will issue Job Cards to every registered household. This is a critical legal document, which also helps to ensure transparency and protect against fraud.
The Job Card is issued immediately after verification, i.e. within a fortnight of the application for registration.
Photographs of adult members who are applicants have to be attached to the job cards.
The State Government in a particular area may order the photograph to be affixed later (but not later than a month) if the immediate provision of a photograph is not possible. No photograph, name or details of any person other than that of the registered adult members of the household to whom that job card belongs shall be affixed or recorded in the Job Cards.
The cost of the Job Cards, including that of the photographs, will be borne as part of the programme cost.
The Job Card will be in the custody of the household to whom it is issued.

Changes to Job Card:

The Job Card shall be valid for a period of five years and will have provision for the addition/deletion of members eligible to work. Deletions in any household on account of demise, or permanent change of residence of a member, are to be reported immediately by the household concerned. Additions desired may be applied for by the household.

Duplicate Job Card:

A cardholder may apply for a duplicate Job Card if the original card is lost or damaged.

The application is to be submitted to the Gram Panchayat and shall be processed in the manner of a new application; with the difference being that the particulars may also be verified using the duplicate copy of the Job Card maintained by the Panchayat.

Grievances:

If a person has a grievance against the non-issuance of a Job Card, he/she may bring the matter to the notice of the Programme Officer. If the grievance is against the Programme Officer, he/she may bring it to the notice of the District Programme Coordinator or the designated grievance-redressal authority at the Block or District level.

All such complaints shall be disposed off within 15 days.

NOTICE FOR COUNSELING OF UPSEE-2011 AND IT’S PROCEDURE

For completing the admission for the best choice through counseling the Candidates opting for admission based on UPSEE-2011 rank counseling and AIEEE /CAT/MAT rank counseling have to complete the following steps:

Step 1: Document Verification:

You are required to reach the Document Verification / Choice Locking Centre (DV& CC), in person as per the schedule to be given on our web site http://www.mtu.ac.in / http://www.gbtu.ac.in. You must come with your Admit Card and a demand draft of Rs. 500/- drawn in favor of the Finance Officer, Mahamaya Technical University, Noida and bring along all the testimonials/ certificates/ documents in original & one set of photocopies as mentioned below. You must get your Document Verification done on the same day and collect the document verified certificate from the Officer available at the reporting center itself. In case of any indicated deficiency you should remove the deficiency and get back to the DV&CC with the correct document/s and thus ensure clearance from the same DV&CC and get your candidature verified during specified time slot at the same Document Verification Centre following same procedure. Detailed instructions are given below.

Step 2: Choice Locking: Report at the designated Choice Locking Centre which is same as the Document Verification Centre as per schedule which will be declared on or before 2nd July, 2011 on the website http://www.upsee.nic.in and http://www.mtu.ac.in. Candidate will be required to lock the choices on computer and take print out of the same after locking it. Generally, the seat allotment will be done in the night on the same day of choice locking. The candidate must report at the Choice Locking Centre on the scheduled date during 8 AM to 10 AM along with the Admit Card & Document Verification Slip, demand draft of Rs. 5000/- drawn in favour of the Finance Officer, Mahamaya Technical University, Noida. Each candidate will himself / herself be locking the choices and leave the centre only after taking printout of the choices locked by him/her and signed by the verification officer at the DV&CC. In case of not locking the options your candidature shall not be considered for the purpose of seat allotment and the sole responsibility for this shall lie only on you the candidate. The admission letter, after the seat allotment, shall be handed over to the candidate on the next day.

Step 3: Collection of seat allotment letter from the choice locking centre and Deposition of fee (Rs.10000/- or Rs.4000/- as applicable) as acceptance of seat by 5 PM on next day. The details of fee and its refund etc. are given in Information Brochure.

Step 4: Reporting at the allotted Institution as per given schedule.

Documents Required for MTU/GBTU/UPTU/UPSEE 2011 Counselling

At the time of Document Verification following documents will be required in original together with an attested photocopy which will have to be submitted at the verification counter of the said counseling centre:

1. Qualifying Examination Certificates and Mark sheets (The eligibility criteria and list of qualifying examinations is given in UPSEE-2011 information brochure).

2. Candidates in respect of whom, the result of the qualifying examination has not been declared by the date of counseling due to any reason whatsoever shall not be eligible for admission.

3. Certificate of High school or equivalent examination for verification of date of birth.

4. Domicile certificate of Parents (Father or Mother only) of the candidate, issued by the competent authority, for candidates who have passed qualifying examination from states other than U.P.

5. Category certificate for OBC candidates issued by the competent authority, if applicable, on prescribed format given in Information Brochure and issued after March 31, 2011 (mandatory due to condition of creamy layer of the society).

6. Category certificate for SC/ST candidates issued by competent authority, if applicable, on prescribed format given in Information Brochure.

7. Physically handicapped candidates will be required to bring a certificate issued by Chief Medical Officer in prescribed format. A medical board, consisting of general physician, orthopedist, and ophthalmologist may be referred to verify the claim of certificate, if there is any doubt.

8. Candidates of Armed Forces category (UPAF) will be required to produce a certificate to this effect issued by competent authority on prescribed format given in Information Brochure.

9. Candidates belonging to freedom fighter’s category (UPFF) will be required to produce a certificate to this effect issued by competent authority on prescribed format given in Information Brochure.

10. The Candidates who have claimed rural weightage will be required to submit a certificate on prescribed format at the time of document verification as given in Information Brochure.

11. An undertaking for medical fitness by the candidates & countersigned by his/her father / guardian to this effect that he will submit, a certificate of fitness as prescribed in Information Brochure at the time of joining the institute allotted to him/her.

12. Account payee bank draft of Rs. 500=00 as counseling fee (non-refundable) will have to be submitted at the time of reporting for Document Verification and separate account payee draft of Rs. 5,000=00 as initial fee (refundable only as per clause 16.2 of information brochure) is to be submitted at the time of reporting for Choice Locking as per announced schedule. Both drafts should be drawn in favour of “Finance Officer, Mahamaya Technical University, Noida” payable at Noida.

13. Candidates will have to come prepared for depositing fee after allotment of seat to the candidates by depositing Bank draft as a part of Institute/college fee (non-refundable as per clause 16.3 of information brochure), Rs. 10,000=00 for General & OBC category candidates and Rs. 4000=00 for SC & ST category candidates at respective counseling centre on the day of issue of admission letter itself, failing which the seat allotted will be cancelled. Draft should be drawn in favour of “Finance Officer, Mahamaya Technical University, Noida” payable at Noida.

14. There will be some seats under the Tuition Fee Waiver scheme for women, economically backward students (annual income of Parents / Guardian less than Rs. 2.50 lakhs from all sources) and physically handicapped students based on merit. The tuition fee waiver to a student shall be given for the duration of course and admitted in first year of B.Tech., B.Pharm., B.Arch., BHMCT ,BFAD, B.Tec.(Bio-Tech.) only. Seats under this scheme shall be displayed on internet and counseling centers at the time of counseling. Economically weaker students are required to bring the income certificate issued by the competent authority (District Magistrate/Additional Magistrate/City Magistrate/Pargana Magistrate/Tahsildar) at the time of counseling.

Important Note:

Candidates should note that they have to report in person at the respective Document Verification Centre / Choice Locking Centre as per schedule given overleaf. Candidates should leave Document Verification & Choice Locking Centre only after getting his/her documents verified. In case of any deficiency the same should be got removed during the stipulated schedule. The candidates when coming for Choice Locking should report latest by 12 noon on the scheduled date and lock their choices on the same day latest by 5.00 P.M.. The candidates will be not be allowed to report after 12 noon for choice locking. In case of not doing so their candidature will not be considered for seat allotment.
